Newsletter #3
I hope you are well. Lots of things happened since our last writing.
Let me introduce you to a new colleague at newpoiyphonies: Arezoo Khazanbeig.
Arezoo will be in particular responsible for the Youyou Group, the biggest artistic pillar of newpolyphonies. A community of 40 people who practice voice with the awareness and reality of diaspora. A group who shares a love for experimentation. Women who practice to be heard. An ecosystem of potential, surfacing in art. A place where borders between professional vocalists and carriers of heritage dissolve. An active memory field.
Arezoo will coordinate the macro- and microlevels of this group, its intricacies, its community values, its projects, beginning with the construction of a website and related archiving initiatives, supported by a grant of the Immaterial Heritage of the Flemish Community Commission (VGC). Soon we are in residence in Kunsthal Ghent (2 to 6 June 2024) to think the making of a book too.
First check out our free performances of YOUYOUYOU at KBR on the occasion of the opening of the museum on 24 and 25 May. A week later the group performs in the conference of AFIELD on Transitional Justice during the Kunstenfestival on 30 May.
We want to transmit by all means. Hoda Siahtiri gave recently a closed YouYou workshop for the LGBT+ community of Merhaba. Yasmina Reggad taught YouYou Group exercises to teenagers on the Canary Islands when working on her own artistic project with whistling choirs. Anissa Rouas and Caroline Daish were in Saint-ALbert School in Molenbeek reaching out to mother and children for intergenerational youyous, upon invitation of MUS.E.
Having a new colleague is like growing an extra muscle in a lively collective body that does not stop giving energy to connections, extend and expand. Reach. Touch.
