newpolyphonies

newpolyphonies is a Brussels-based production environment for artistic practices and transdisciplinary creation around voice, sound and listening.

Home to the artistic practice of Myriam Van Imschoot and the long-term collective YouYou Group, newpolyphonies supports artistic constellations that engage with communities, ecologies, biotopes, landscapes and architectures, while remaining attending to relationships across both intimate and broader scales.

Its practices move across performance, social choreography, participation, publication, visual art and installation, embracing hybridity and approaches that elude conventional categorisation.

newpolyphonies may be found in a suburban Paris schoolyard, making sound work with children over the course of a year. It may take the form of a nocturnal performance in which an audience sings itself to sleep, a ritual of blessing on a wasteland, or an audio walk that activates a corner of the city. It draws from vernacular traditions and avant-gardes alike, and from practices that bring people into relation.

The work happens in Brussels, across Belgium and beyond, above and under the radar, inside and outside institutions. These different contexts are not opposites but part of the same ecosystem. Internationally, newpolyphonies brings its practices into new places where they can be altered by local people, conditions and histories.

Artistic processes are regularly opened through workshops, listening sessions, labs, residencies and other shared situations. These moments allow practices to circulate and accumulate, forming a substrate from which the artwork can grow.

Through KIN, the organisation opens itself to alliances that broaden and strengthen this force field. Kinotita, for instance, creates a platform for exchange and cross-border creation between women composers working with plural voices and groups.

Artists in newpolyphonies move with different gravitations and scales — open to mutual attraction while following their own course. True to its name, it does not seek to make one whole. It keeps the poly — the many — alive within its compositions and manifestations, as both a question and a promise. newpolyphonies is supported by the Flemish Government.
