Myriam Van Imschoot

Myriam Van Imschoot is a Brussels-based artist working since 2007 in and across different media, including performance, film, installation and artist publication.

Myriam's work is marked by a new kind of performance practice, carving out a path between established disciplines such as music, performance and visual arts, with voice and sustained relationships acting at once as levers and anchors. A recurring question since What Nature Says (2015) is what it means to sound together in societies in crisis and transition. It resurfaces in different constellations and at different scales: in the musical polyphonies of newpolyphonies with HYOID, in the temporary nocturnal community of Nocturnes for a Society, and increasingly in occupations and interventions that engage with public space and the infrastructures of the city.

In 2021 she founded newpolyphonies, named after one of her performances, as a production environment in which an integral approach to making can be sustained—from research and artistic process to presentation formats that escape easy classification. Within this environment, making art public can take different forms: labs, sessions, the commoning of spaces, activations, local remakes, or works that continue to circulate through the practices and repertoire of the YouYou Group. Rather than ending with a premiere, a work can become a substrate for further use, exchange and transformation.

Another long-running strand is developed with Federico Protto and centres on sound-art projects with children. With the support of Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Pierre de Lune, Netwerk Aalst, Kunstencentrum BUDA and galleries, they have made exhibitions, films, a children’s parliament in a schoolyard, audio walks and recordings. Part of this body of work was assembled in the publication COUR (2025).

With Marcus Bergner, Van Imschoot is part of the film collective Filmers and forms MM, a sound-poetry duo working at the edges of language and searching for other patterns of communication.

Her films were presented in musea, galleries, and film festivals and are held in various collections. Le Cadeau and Yodel Portrait Phil Minton are held by Argos; Fax film by Kran Film Collective.

Founded by Van Imschoot and Elisa Kühnl, Kinotita became active in 2026 as a feminist platform mobilising the expertise of composers who work with plural voices and large groups through cross-border exchange and creation.

Across these different trajectories, the artwork remains the lynchpin of what Van Imschoot thinks of as a poetic ecology - shaped by confluence and capable of consequence: a window, a miracle in detail, a gesture.
